Rockstar’s iconic title Grand Theft Auto V is making headlines once again—but not for the reasons fans might hope. Less than a year after GTA V joined the PlayStation Plus Extra catalog, it has been officially announced that the game will be leaving the subscription service, alongside other major titles like MotoGP 24, Dying Light 2 Stay Human Reloaded Edition, and Like a Dragon: Ishin.
Originally added in November 2024, GTA V‘s presence on PS Plus Extra offered console players an easy way to revisit Los Santos. However, its departure highlights a larger trend across the community: despite the release of GTA V Enhanced, many players still prefer the original Legacy version.
When the Enhanced edition launched on March 4, expectations were sky-high. Unfortunately, the reality didn’t live up to the hype. Technical issues, missing features, and overall disappointment led to a rough 50% user review score on Steam. Although updates have improved that number slightly—to around 65%—it still pales in comparison to the Legacy version’s strong 87% rating, secured by nearly 1.8 million players.
Even player activity reflects the sentiment shift. According to SteamDB, while Enhanced initially saw a spike in player numbers, momentum quickly shifted back to Legacy. In the past 24 hours alone, GTA V Legacy recorded 81,854 active players compared to Enhanced‘s 70,203—a gap that continues to grow steadily week after week.
Meanwhile, on the PC side of things, GTA V remains available through Xbox Game Pass, keeping the online player base healthy without the looming threat of a subscription expiration.
Adding to the anticipation, Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, is set to release its fourth quarter and fiscal year 2025 results on May 15. Historically, these financial updates have confirmed or hinted at release timelines for major titles, including the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI. As of now, GTA VI is still expected to launch in Fall 2025—but fans are holding their breath for any potential surprises during the upcoming earnings call.
While console players deal with the loss of GTA V from PS Plus, Rockstar continues to keep GTA Online fresh with weekly bonuses and discounts. Through April 30, players can earn double GTA$ and RP for completing Terrorbyte Client Jobs, with an added $100K bonus for finishing three of them. A range of vehicles, including the Benefactor Terrorbyte, Överflöd Zeno, and Truffade Nero, are also on sale at 30% off.
Additionally, this week’s Gun Van specials offer big savings: GTA+ members can grab the El Strickler Military Rifle for free, while the Combat Shotgun and Battle Rifle see hefty discounts for all players.
For now, it seems GTA V fans—especially on PC—are sticking with the classic Legacy experience as Rockstar quietly marches toward the next era of Grand Theft Auto. Whether GTA VI can finally deliver the revolution fans have been waiting for remains to be seen.
