Nintendo Switch 1 Recent Update Enables Some Switch 2 Features

Major update introduces Virtual Game Cards, GameShare, and cloud-based system transfers ahead of Switch 2 release.

With the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 just over a month away, Nintendo has released version 20.0.0 of its Switch 1 software, introducing a suite of new features designed to ease the transition between consoles. This forward-looking update brings support for Virtual Game Cards, GameShare, and a cloud-based system transfer tool, all paving the way for the next generation of Nintendo gaming.

One of the most notable additions is the new System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2 option, located under System Settings. This feature allows users to upload data from their current Switch to the cloud in preparation for download to a new Switch 2 system. However, Nintendo warns that initiating a cloud transfer will factory reset your current Switch 1 — so unless you’re ready to upgrade, it’s best to hold off. Cloud transfer data will only be stored for one year if left unused.

Another highlight is the introduction of Virtual Game Cards, which collect your digital software and downloadable content into game-like entries that can be “loaded” or “ejected” between two systems. These digital cards also enable lending — you can temporarily share games with family group members on your Nintendo Account. If needed, you can even reclaim a game in real time while the other user is online. However, if the borrower goes offline, you’ll have to wait until the two-week loan period ends for automatic return.

GameShare also makes its debut in this update — at least in terms of interface. While the feature is visible on Switch 1 consoles, it won’t be functional until Switch 2 systems are in play, as sharing can only originate from the newer device via local wireless.

Nintendo has also rolled out Online License Settings, giving users another option to access their digital games across devices. When enabled, this setting allows for online verification of licences, letting players use their digital titles without relying solely on Virtual Game Cards — as long as they’re connected to the internet.

For users eager to make the switch, Nintendo’s update serves as a well-timed bridge between console generations. However, as always, reading the fine print is essential. Cloud transfers, for instance, are reversible — but with restrictions. If your data was uploaded from a Switch OLED model, it can only be downloaded again to another OLED unit if you choose to revert.

The Nintendo Switch 2 arrives on 5th June for £449.99, with more details available in Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide and system transfer FAQ.
